Approach

There are 3 main ways that Regional Authorities approach pest management; animal, plant and site-led.

Animal and plant are both known as species-led programmes, in which the objective is to control the individual pest species. Diseases are classified as either animal or plant according to the species they affect.

Site-led programmes differ in that they focus on a particular site, which has some specific value. These programmes will often target a suite of pests, which may not be identified individually. Site-led programmes may also be used to prevent the spread of a pest (or pests) from an infested site.

Management Programmes

This table provides a simple explanation for each Management Programme. Although the Regional Authorities try to use terms consistently, there are many regional variations. For simplicity, Management Programmes with similar objectives they have been grouped together and renamed where necessary. Where this has happened the new Management Programme name is shown in the far left-hand column; the original Management Programme name is shown in the next column
